Here is the June 05 report on our work on the Mosquito. Progress has centred around the cockpit equipment/panels etc. as well as electrical equipment and the elevators.
1. We have completed the installation of the refurbished canon plug shells and fabrication of the numbering placards for the electrical junction boxes A thru E.
2. The engine and system instrument sub panel has been completed, top coated in matt black, panel shock mounts, R. C. compass mounting bracket and refurbished terminal blocks refitted in their original locations.
3. The air supply/oxygen indicator sub panel has been completed, top coated in black wrinkle finish as per the original. Refurbished blind flying panel lower bracket, oxygen gauge mounting plate, switch guards and air supply gauge wedges refitted in original locations. The bomb switch panel has been painted and various parts refurbished and re-attached. Panel is still work in progress.
4. Air supply triple gauge has been overhauled .
5. Hydraulic selector panel completed with flap selector lever guard fitted with replacement bushings and return spring..
6. Gun master switch panel completed with refurbished switch and replacement return spring..
7. New compass mount bracket fabricated and compass compensator overhauled..
8. Pilots cold air punkah louver refurbished with new felt seals. Navigators cold air valve refurbished.
9. Two new machine gun door lock catches fabricated as per samples.
10. Machine gun mounting cross tube assemblies dismantled and overhauled. Tubes repainted and delivered to the wood shop for installation. The gun mounting hardware is away for plating.
11. We have tidied up the canopy assembly and repaired and straightened those elements that were damaged and delivered it to the wood shop for mounting on the fuselage. There is still quite a lot of work to do to this but its needed now, so we have delayed completion until after it has been trial fitted.
12. Elevators disassembled, components inspected and repaired as necessary. All corrosion treated and neutralized. All the spars and ribs are repairable and only the outer and nose skins require replacement. Significant rework of the tip assembly has been required on one unit and parts have been liberated from a third assembly in this process. Both main torque tube assemblies are salvageable and have been treated and are ready for refitting.
Woodwork
The progress on the fuselage woodwork is not as impressive as last month where the shells were removed from the molds. Lots has gone on never the less, with the various floor assemblies fitted at the pilot and navigators positions.
The cleanup of the inner skin is now complete and work has begun laying out and fitting the 400 odd anchor nut assys into the fuselage walls. These nut ferrules are used to attach the myriad of components to the insides of the fuselage, from the rudder pedals to the throttle box, to the ashtray. They are literally everywhere and have to be located from dimensions off the drawings and by placing the component to be attached in position and marking off the hole locations.
The armour panels have been installed in the back of the cockpit and the detailing for the instrument panel mount has been fitted. The pilots door and the rear fuse access doors have both been fitted out with hinges and latches and mounted into the fuselage walls.
The fuselage insert panels, gun bay and bomb bay doors have been completed and are now ready for installation once the halves are together.
The rear bulkhead which hold the tailwheel assy and rear fin attach is also nearing completion and will be fitted into the fuse when the halves are joined.
The next major step is the join up process which will come when all the attachment ferrule nuts are finally fitted.
